Selection criteria of admission for international students into different academic programmes under Gauhati University
1.1 International Students :
Gauhati University welcomes foreign students from all over the world for admission into its different courses and programs. Till date, foreign students from about 25 countries including USA, Japan, South Asian Countries and African countries have been admitted into several programs. To attract more foreign students, many MOUs have been signed between Gauhati University and foreign universities/institutions. The notable ones are: Bizard Institute(UK), University of Greenwich, Kent (UK), University of West of Scotland (UK), Uppasal University (Sweden), Stefan Meyer Institute, Vienna (Austria), Kunming Institute of Botany, Kunming (China), Kagawa University (Japan), University Of Naples (Italy), National University of Loas (Loas) etc. Besides, continuous efforts are on to undertake joint research and teaching with foreign universities/institutions that will enable both parties to exchange academic expertise, and this will have positive effects on students as of participating institutions and the societies in which they are function.
1.1.1 Admission
Gauhati University has separate guidelines regarding admission to Graduate, Masters and Research Programs. Academic qualifications from Universities or Boards of Higher Education, recognized as equivalent by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) shall be the sole criterion for admission under these regulations. Maximum 20% seats on supernumerary basis are reserved for admission into the various academic programmes/courses in the University Departments/Centres for the International/NRI students. By ‘International student’ is meant one who has valid passport of thehome country at the time of application. Students from the negative list of countries of MHRD, Govt. of India will not be admitted. International Students can seek admission to various Graduate, Postgraduate and Research Programmes under the following categories:
Self-financing students (Full programme)
Cultural Exchange Fellowship Programmes (Govt. of India): International students with ICSSR fellowship (Government of India) desirous of admission under this Fellowship Programme are required to apply through the ICCR portal. They will send the application to ICSSR Government of India and then ICSSR will forward the application/s to various Universities/Institutes in India as the case may be for consideration. In case the applicant is found suitable for admission, recommendation letter will be uploaded in the ICCR portal and students will get information of the same from the portal. After received of the acceptance letter from students, admission offer letter will be sent to him/her with an intimation to the Regional Centre of Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
Visiting Students under Memorandum of Understanding (MoU): Admission of International students/NRI under the MoU will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions spelt out in the MoU agreed to between Gauhati University and the Country/University/Institution concerned.

a. Graduate Programme: Gauhati University offers 44 Undergraduate programmes under faculty of Arts, Science, Technology, Commerce & Management and Law. These graduate programmes are integrated to masters Programme named as Five Year Integrated Master programme (FYIMP). Students will have the option to earn certificate after one year, Diploma after two years, Degree after three years and Honours and Honours with research after four years.
For Graduate programme, International students are waived from entrance test and TOFEL score.
If the marks/ grades sheet, certificates, predictive scores or any other relevant documents are not written in English, then it be must translated in to English language and certified by the Education Counselor from the Embassy/High Commissioner of the respective countries.

The admission form is available at www.gauhati.ac.in. All documents (scanned copies of transcript testimonials) along with filled up admission form and proof of financial support or scholarship should reach before 90 days of the date of final admission at secyuc@gauhati.ac.in.
b. Masters Programme:
As per the UGC guidelines, Gauhati University allows international students to be admitted into its various Masters programmes/courses. Maximum 20% seats are reserved for students of other universities, if not otherwise specified based on entrance test as well as marks obtained at the undergraduate level. The number of seats for International students will fall under this category. An international student should meet the following criteria to get admission into Gauhati University.
· An International student should maintain the eligibility conditions as stated in the admission prospectus of Gauhati University that is
available at www.gauhati.ac.in
· An International student should provide the TOFEL score to show the proficiency of English if his/her mother tongue is not English.
Although the TOFEL score should not be older than two years but in some special case Gauhati University may consider TOFEL score up to three years.
· An International student should produce the proof of financial support or scholarship.
· If an International student has not gone through the eligibility program/course as stated in the minimum eligibility conditions for Masters
Admission to Gauhati University, Admission Committee of Gauhati University will take the final decision.
· If an International student fulfills the first three criteria listed above, then s/he may be relieved from the entrance test. However,
International students resident in India should face the entrance test.
· An International student should apply for admission with the following documents: correctly filled up form (available at University website
www.gauhati.ac.in), TOFEL score, proof of financial support or scholarship and two letters of recommendation from their present teachers.
· All documents (scanned copies of transcript testimonials) along with filled up admission form should reach before 90 days of the date of final admission at secyuc@gauhati.ac.in.
c. Ph.D Programme:
The admission process into the Ph.D programme of Gauhati University is a two-step process: common entrance test (known as GU-RET) and counseling process. An International Applicant is not required to appear in the GU-RET. The Counseling process for International Applicants may be carried out through other methods of available technology, for example, video conferencing, Skype etc.
Selection Criteria:
An International Applicant with not less than 55 (fifty five) percent of marks or equivalent grade in the concerned subject can apply for admission into the Ph.D programme of Gauhati University in a subject in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Law, Technology, Fine Arts, Engineering and Medical Science or other professional subjects of Gauhati University in the respective equivalent qualifying examination.
An International Applicant can send the filled up application form (available at www.gauhati.ac.in) along with a research proposal either to academic@gauhati.ac.in through email or to Academic Registrar, Gauhati University, Guwahati, 781014, Assam, India by post.
An International Applicant will have to demonstrate proficiency in English either through standardized tests such as TOFEL, IELTS etc. or through a proven record of receiving education in the English Language over a considerable length of time.
· An International student should produce the proof of financial support or scholarship.
While considering International applications, the Department Research Committee (DRC)/ Faculty Research Committee (FRC) of the concerned department will take into consideration the merit of the research proposal, reference letters, and scores of standardized tests such as GRE.
1.2.2 VISA Requirements:
On being cleared for admission, all applicants shall have to produce their VISA at the time of actual admission.
· Students admitted to a Graduate/Postgraduate programme or any course shall have to produce Student Visa.
· Students admitted to M.Phil/Ph.D programme/course shall have to produce Research Visa.

1.2.3 Documents required to produce at GUOIR:
After selection for admission, International students have to produce the photocopies of the following documents at the office of Gauhati University International Relations Wing.
1. VISA and valid passport
2. Medical fitness certificate from a recognized hospital of home country
3. Health Insurance Policy.
